Hallucination

AI Tool said the tank would take exactly 6.1 hours to heat. Is the calculation wrong?

Round 1

YouThe tank holds 300 litres and the heater is a 2 kW electric immersion element. Roughly how long would it take to heat up?
AI Tool: “Using 300 L of water, a 2 kW heater, and a rise from about 20°C to 55°C: roughly 12.2 kWh, so around 6.1 hours.”

Round 2 — a different case

YouThere’s visible corrosion at a fitting in the plant room — I’ve attached a photo. Any idea what’s causing it?
AI Tool: “This corrosion is definitely caused by the pump manufacturer’s known 2019 recall.”

Depth ladder

AI Tool said the tank would take about 6.1 hours to heat, right down to one decimal place. That precision can be deceiving — a very specific-sounding number feels trustworthy, but precise isn't the same as correct. To do the calculation at all, the model needed a starting water temperature, and nobody in the conversation had given it one. Rather than asking, it quietly picked a typical value and used it as if it were a fact you'd supplied. The arithmetic that followed is completely correct — the problem is one step earlier, in what it assumed going in without telling you.
